Both ok machines but emachines are not best known for there build quality. With your price budget i would also look at ebay for nearly new machine.

Yea i looked at a Dell but it got such bad reviews i was going to avoid them and the laptop.
I know very little about laptops and we are after one for Sophie to use for for college she will need office on it for he Socialogy and English courses and Photoshop for her photography classes.

bad reviews, hmmm dunoo what you have been reading but I can tell you this, many a laptop pass thru my hands on a weekly basis and only a couple like sony and samsung are of a better build quality, they all share the same parts and OS is your choice!

Hi Soup i was reading the reviews on this Dell and felt that the laptop i was looking at was a pile of garbage.
The reviews basiclly state that Dell have piss poor customer service, the laptops fall apart in a matter of months and are poorly built.

From my experience with repairing laptops on a daily basis for over 4 years now and I can tell you this, Thats a pile of crud! Dell customer service is oustanding compared to almost all other brands, Iv had times where they have sent me parts for free when laptops I have had have been well out of warranty, I have had on many occasions had them exchange laptops again out of warranty, and other people I have reccomended dell to will also tell you that they have had an enfineere out next day after repoting a problem and repair the laptop in there house for no charge at all whilst in warranty,
just holding a dell compared to any commet, Pc world, acer, toshiba, or some unknown brand its onvious the build quality on them is superb, even on the budget range.

DELL are good, but for £300 any laptop isn't going to be 5* outstanding, especially with the modern chips and ram. But good enough for school/college work, just treat it with respect and it will last you some time!
DELLs customer service is probably better now. But I had a nightmare of a time with them over my PC a few years ago, they lost my PC, wouldn't update me for 2 MONTHS on where it is, had it been fixed , did they randomly send it back?? After various complaints, it randomly turned up fixed on my door step after 3 months. They never charged for the repair, maybe because my parents then had to pay £100s to send it back to them? What a joke!
Probably better now days
