I have two
Nikon 5700 and the nikon 8700.

They are cracking cameras and take nice sharp clear pics.

The two links above are of the new nikons.

I'm a nikon man but the two you have linked too seem to be near on par.

The Nikon L120 that Twigs highlighted runs off AA batteries. Not the most popular option.

The FZ45 is very good, and is supplied with a lithium ion battery in the box, as does the he P500, which has the longest zoom range currently available on a bridge camera. Both will give you great quality photos.

They are quite large, so if you want a good zoom in a smaller body, the Panasonic TZ18 or TZ20 are excellent too.

TZ18 LINK (http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/80676/show.html)

TZ20 LINK (http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/80675/show.html)

The TZ20 has a £30 cashback on it - they send you a cheque afterwards.

I can only do a discount at staff price in my own store. The best deals otherwise are the online exclusives.

This is what I have just got myself,Canon SX30 IS and with a 35x optical zoom (840mm equiv) & 14.1mp it really is a versatile camera.

Took it to Cornwall for a test run and was well happy!

Go for the Sony if you have to go down that route as you can get a whole pile of stonking 2nd hand Minolta Lens for the Sony. SSony took over Minolta's Camera business. There is a small adapter for a few ££ to take al old Minolta and new Sony lenses.

The HX9 will not take additional lenses.

The Canon is very good, but after chatting with Soupster on TS, he had ruled out the bridge cameras like the SX30 in favour of a pocketable sized compact.

Got my Sony's mixed up, didn't look at which one it was, like a **** I assumed it was the NEX-5

Sony's are good, and the HX-9 at least has 16x Optical zoom....
