A TIN OF COMPO

He res my problem: for some reason the other day my son decides he cant be bothered to wait for his game Planetside to close down before rushing out to play with his mates. So he uses the trusted method of just switching off the computer. In doing so the system has a bit of a mind fart and now doesn't work properly.
Here are the symptoms:
1. Explorer will not run therefore no task bar.
2. No system restore because explorer isn't working.
3. Starting computer in safe mode makes no difference.
4. I have now reloaded XP into a different directory, which is working correctly.
5. I can still see my files and folders and they are not all corrupted, but accessing them is proving difficult e.g. word files will not open because Word wont run.
Has any one any idea as to how i can do the following:
1. Get rid of the original Windows XP
2. Rest my programs to how they were
Hopefully someone may have ideas
Cheers
