hey peeps found out something rather funky. UK Online are offering an 8mb downpipe and 400kbps up for a paltry £39.99. i shall let the article explain the why's and what for's.
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/65867/8mbps-broadband-service-goes-live.html
once i got my move to Loanhead sorted (the exchange is just round the corner from the new house..hahahahahahaha) i am getting this puppy after phoning them and seing what magnitude of connection i can get.
my present ISP ,Pipex is offering a 2mb connection at £39.99 as their latest offer.
the only questionni would ask uk online is are they using that bloody awful bitstream tech that bulldog used to little effect(they have been bought over by someone competant i think)
anyways thought i'd spread the joy to the tins

it's only in 4 cities at the mo and mine aint one of 'em.
Though i'm expecting that this may be the start of the UK's other service providers ramping up the speeds.
We can only hope.

Dear customer
COMING SOON - EVEN FASTER BROADBAND
At Telewest, we're committed to providing you the best broadband services at the best possible value.
So with this in mind, we're especially pleased to announce our second programme of speed upgrades this year to make your blueyonder service even faster.
We increased the speed of your Internet service in April by 50%, from 2Mbps to your current speed of 3Mbps. When this second speed upgrade is completed, your new speed will be 4Mbps - a further 33% increase.
In addition, and just for the 4Mbps service, we've increased the upload speed from 256Kbps to 384Kbps.
This increase will come at NO EXTRA COST and with completely UNLIMITED USAGE. Your current monthly charge will stay exactly the same.
THERE'S NOTHING YOU NEED TO DO
Work on our network will start in December and be completed by January 2005. Everything will happen automatically, so there's nothing you need to do. There's no need to contact us.
Once we've completed the work in your area, we'll write to you again so you'll know exactly when you can start enjoying your faster speed.

no cable in Edinburgh City Centre, or so they say....St Leonard's Police station accross the road has cable, the pub 5 doors up the road has cable..........we don't and they have "no plans to expand the network".. tubes, some way to run a business.
So i either move to a cable area or move to Loanhead(house 20 metres from exchange) and hope that it's unbundled at some point.
in jJapan on ADSL 2 you can get a 25mb down and 2mb up connection for £12.50!!! and they offer options of connections up to 50MB for the home!!!!
GITS no fair, gonna go huff. who won the bloody war anyway?(joke)

There is only one company to blame for the obsolete state of the communications network in the UK and that is BT...if they had kept up with technology instead of the high ranking fat cats giving each other massive payoffs and bonuses then we'd all be sitting with decent speeds.
I HATE BT!

on that point im usin BT and hav a 576kb broadband connection........................but......downloa ds never go over 60kb/s and sometimes randomly go down to 3kb/s or even less. I'm on a network which won't help but this doesn't change the speed too much and anyway my sister only uses the computer for msn really and dad for work but usually he does it wt his work office. I click on the Internet connection sign in the taskbar however and it says its doing 576Knbps. Any ideas why its doin that?

That's about the correct d/l speed and is not a problem at all. That's a big 'K' rather than a small 'k' - i.e. 1K = 8k
