Chances are I'll be buying a new PC after Xmas and I'll want to start my own website. Can anyone recommend a decent, affordable host? Preferably not one that's linked into a contract with an ISP.

Second thing is domain names. I'm not familiar with this whole thing so can anyone tell me if there's an "official" place and price for registering them? Any advice where/when/how to do this?

Z.

PS. I need to do this for my own sanity. There's stuff I really have to tell the world and the Daily Mail ain't about to give me a column.

PPS. I am not setting up a rival squad or trying to draw people away from ATINOF. In fact, I recommended a friend to try the maps recently. Ain't that nice of me?

PPPS. Yes, I will be getting back onto BHD and possibly JO. Easy pickings for all. Probably around late Jan, early Feb.

its always best to buy your domain from a seperate source to your host

but for a first website www.34sp.com offer a very reliable, reasonably priced set of services (they aint the cheapest, but they aint gonna disappear overnight either)

if your after a larger amount of webspace / more features, then oneandone.co.uk are pretty good. (but it'll cost u more!)

http://www.nominet.org.uk/ are the official UK registrars, but you can buy your domain anywhere

uk2.net are as cheap as any.

dont go for a 'host with us and get your domain free' package - no such thing as a free lunch - it WILL cost you later.
